Moroccan Parliament, FOPREL Sign Cooperation Framework Agreement

 A cooperation framework agreement granting Morocco an observer member status within the Forum of Presiding Officers of Legislative Assemblies of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL) was signed on Monday in Rabat.

The agreement was signed by Speaker of the house of representatives Rachid Talbi Alami and speaker of the house of advisors Mohamed Sheikh Biadillah, on the Moroccan side, and by Henry Mora Jimenez, Forum's acting president and president of Costa Rica's legislative assembly, as well as other member states, on FOPREL side.

 Morocco's adherence to FOPREL is a starting point which will enabled the Kingdom to interact with countries of Central America and the Caribbean Basin and voice its stance on many national causes notably the Moroccan Sahara issue, said a statement by the house of representatives.

 

 This adherence as an observer country will also enable Morocco to put its expertize at FOPREL's disposal mainly concerning development, immigration and counterterrorism fight, it added.

Morocco made very pertinent proposals to reach a solution to the Sahara issue, said, on Monday in Rabat, Henry Mora Jimenez, acting president of the Forum of Presiding Officers of Legislative Assemblies of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL).

In a statement to the press after a meeting with speaker of the house of representatives Rachid Talbi Alami, Jimenez, also president of Costa Rica's legislative assembly, underlined that Morocco put on the talks table very pertinent proposals to reach a solution to this issue.

Jimenez, who is leading an important delegation of speakers of parliaments of Central Africa and the Caribbean islands, said that Morocco has inalienable rights on its territory, calling for continuing negotiations under the UN aegis to reach a solution to this regional conflict.

For his part, Talbi Alami hailed the admission of Morocco as an observer member of FOPREL, underlining that the Kingdom's presence within the Forum will help it defend its just national cause.

The FOPREL members are Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, Honduras and Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Mexico.
