Ahmed Touizi of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) was elected on Tuesday as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Touizi secured 220 votes out of the 369 votes cast, against 59 votes for Driss El Azami El Idrissi of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), while 90 ballots were declared invalid.
The election, held under the supervision of the House’s interim presiding officer, Abdelaziz Abba, was conducted in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the House.
In an address following his election, Touizi expressed his pride in the confidence placed in him by MPs, noting that the 12th legislature comes at an exceptional juncture that calls on the legislative institution to play its role in supporting Morocco’s ambitions, consolidating its position as an emerging economic power, implementing the initiatives launched across the Kingdom for the benefit of citizens, driving economic growth, and strengthening social and territorial justice.
In this regard, he stressed that the Royal Guidelines set out in the speech delivered at the opening of the 12th legislature constitute a key reference for understanding current challenges and defining priorities, which must be translated, within the remit of the House, into institutional action based on pooling efforts to achieve the expected results.
Regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, the new Speaker of the House of Representatives underscored the importance of mobilizing all diplomatic means to preserve and consolidate the gains achieved by the Kingdom, particularly in light of the momentum generated by UN Security Council Resolution 2797.
He also highlighted parliamentary diplomacy as an essential lever for supporting the efforts of official diplomacy, serving the Kingdom’s strategic interests and fostering its engagement with its regional and international environment.
As for parliamentary work, Touizi, who chaired the PAM group in the House of Representatives during the previous legislature, stressed the need to promote legislative action as an effective instrument for keeping pace with economic and social changes and translating the Kingdom’s policy choices into legal provisions that meet development needs and citizens’ aspirations.
Under Article 62 of the Constitution, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the members of its Bureau, the chairs of the standing committees and their respective bureaux are elected at the beginning of each legislature, again in the third year during the April session, and for the remainder of the legislature.
