Morocco’s Dam Reservoirs at 37.4% Capacity

As of July 7, Morocco’s dam reservoirs have reached 4.3 billion m³, representing 37.4% capacity, according to a government press release from the Head of Government’s Office, following a high-level meeting on Wednesday in Rabat of the Steering Committee for the National Drinking Water and Irrigation Program (2020–2027).

Despite some improvement in water levels, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch emphasized the need for cautious and responsible water use, especially during the summer, calling for awareness campaigns and urgent measures to secure drinking water, particularly in rural areas, according to the press release.

The meeting reviewed progress on key projects of the National Drinking Water and Irrigation Program 2020–2027, including major dam interconnections (Sebou-Bouregreg; Dar Khrofa-Oued Makhazine), commissioning of 8 large dams between 2021 and 2025, seawater desalination (aiming for 1.7 billion m³ capacity by 2030), wastewater reuse for irrigation, and rural water supply improvements. Adjustments were also made to small and medium dam projects in high rainfall areas.

Akhannouch called on various stakeholders to further their involvement and mobilization for the optimal and efficient implementation of this program, in accordance with the agreed deadline, in application of the High Royal Directives. He also stressed the need to work to ensure the requisite coherence between water policy and agricultural policy.

The meeting was attended by Minister of the Interior Abdelouafi Laftit, the Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka, Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fishing, Rural Development and Water and Forests Ahmed El Bouari, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Economy and Finance, in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, and Managing Director of the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water, Tarik Hamane.
