Sahara Issue: Jordan Reiterates Support for Autonomy Plan

Jordan reiterated, on Tuesday before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, its support for the autonomy initiative, presented by Morocco as a solution to the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

This autonomy plan is a "serious, realistic and credible" initiative for the settlement of this conflict in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and the Security Council resolutions, while taking into account the specificities of this region and the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire national territory, said the representative of Jordan at a meeting of the Committee.

In this framework, the Jordanian diplomat hailed Morocco's sincere commitment to reach a final solution to this conflict, through its proposal for the autonomy plan, while welcoming the efforts undertaken by the Kingdom to ensure the development of its Sahara through the launch of socio-economic projects.

The Jordanian representative also hailed the efforts of the UN Secretary General and his personal envoy for the Sahara, Horst Köhler, to move forward in the political process to reach a realistic and lasting solution to this dispute.
