The Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Ms. Lakshrni Puri welcomed, Wednesday in Rabat, the "progressive vision" of HM King Mohammed VI in the field of gender equality.

"His Majesty the King initiated a progressive vision with which Morocco adopted a constitution among the most advanced in Africa and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in terms of gender equality, parity, non-discrimination and empowerment of women, " the UN official told press following her meeting with Minister delegate for Foreign Affairs and cooperation, Youssef Amrani.

"Morocco is on track to be a leader not only in the MENA region but also internationally", thanks to the significant progress made in consolidating the rights of women and promoting gender mainstreaming which guarantees gender equality in accordance with the Millennium development Goals (MDGs), said Ms. Puri.

She expressed the readiness of the UN Women to work with the Moroccan government to implement this constitutional evolution by translating it through laws and institutions.

UN Women works with Morocco on several projects within the framework of the government's plan of gender equality, which relate in particular to the political participation of women, the fight against violence against women and gender budgeting, she said.

During their talks, Mr. Amrani and Ms. Puri reviewed all components of the "strong partnership" between Morocco and UN Women.

They, particularly, focused on the significant opportunities offered by the structural reforms undertaken by Morocco, including the reform of the justice and the regionalization process.

The two sides stressed the need to strengthen the cooperation between the Kingdom of Morocco and UN Women to consolidate Morocco's role as a leader in women's rights in the region and to work together to the transfer of best practices from the Moroccan experience to countries that wish to engage in similar processes.
