Covid-19: Fisheries' Activity is Continuing, Offer To Be Reinforced, Ministry

The activity of fisheries is continuing in order to maintain the regular supply of the market and the offer of fish is being reinforced, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Waters and Forests.

"The current period should experience a larger offer thanks to a surge in fisheries' activities which underwent during the first quarter of the year the usual low season (particularly for the pelagic fisheries), as well as the bad weather conditions that marked this same period, underlined on Tuesday a press release from the department of fisheries, adding that "the supply of fish will  be reinforced".

Unloading is set at the usual averages noted during this period (1,900 T/day since the beginning of March), said the same source.

It recalled that in the context of the health crisis linked to Covid-19 and the measures taken by the country to fight against the spread of this virus, the fisheries sector has been organized since the start of the state of health emergency, in favor of the continuity of its activities and supplying the market.

Thanks to the expected increase in available volumes, the price of fisheries' products will be kept at stable levels with an increase in supply during the month of Ramadan, the statement said.

It added that all the necessary measures have been taken in order to offer fish products at accessible prices in first-sale and wholesale markets.

The department also said that all infrastructure related to fishing and marketing is operational, including fish markets and wholesale markets in compliance with the required health instructions.

All the wholesale markets are continuously supplied, the same source said, adding that the quantities transited by the wholesale markets increased by 25% during the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period of 2019.

On average, 500 T are distributed daily in the wholesale markets, it concluded.
